You’re Allowed to Want Both: Family Time and Meaningful Work

Half Term Reflections

As we come to the end of half term, I’m feeling that familiar mix of gratitude and reflection.

We’ve just spent a wonderful week together as a family. A trip to London, seeing Back to the Future: The Musical, long relaxed brunches, thousands of steps exploring the city, and a visit to Frameless, an immersive art gallery that completely wowed us.

Just simple, uninterrupted time together.

But this point in the holidays always reminds me how different life used to feel.

When Work and Family Felt Like a Choice

Back when I was teaching, the last days of a school holiday often felt heavy.

Not because I didn’t enjoy my job, but because returning to work meant losing that slower pace of family life. The long conversations, the unhurried mornings, the feeling of being fully present with my boys.

It always felt like I was counting down to the next break.

And underneath it all was a constant tension. Feeling like I had to choose between being present for my family and building a fulfilling career.

I now know so many parents feel exactly the same.

The Truth About Work Life Balance for Parents

For years, I believed that meaningful work and family life naturally compete with each other.

But the reality is, most parents don’t want to choose.

They want:

  • Time with their children
  • Work that feels purposeful
  • Financial independence
  • Flexibility around family life

Wanting both isn’t unrealistic. It’s completely valid.

Finding Flexible Work That Fits Around Family Life

Running my Story Rangers territory changed everything for me.

It showed me that it really is possible to build a business that works around your family, not the other way around.

I can:

  • Do meaningful work I care about
  • Earn an income
  • Be present for everyday family moments

It isn’t about working less. It’s about working differently.

And now, one of the most rewarding parts of what we do is helping other parents create that same balance.
